One more cyclone is set to strike within a week of Cyclone Niwar. Deep pressure over the Bay of Bengal in southwest has turned into cyclone Burevi and is expected to hit the coast of Sri Lanka tonight.

The Indian Meteorological Department has issued a warning for Cyclone Burevi. The meteorological department has issued a red alert on December 3 in four cities of Kerala - Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta and Alappuzha.

After reaching Trikomali in Sri Lanka, Burevi is expected to move towards the Comorin area around the Gulf of Mannar and around Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu, the meteorological department bulletin said. It will then proceed west-southwest and cross the coast of South Tamil Nadu between Kanyakumari and Pamban on the morning of December 4, the department said.

At 2.30 pm on Wednesday, the cyclonic storm formed 110 km northeast of Sri Lanka, 330 km southeast of Pamban in Tamil Nadu and 520 km northeast of Kanyakumari, the meteorological department said. The department said that on the afternoon of December 3, the speed of the cyclone will be 70-80 km per hour and it will be very close to Pamban. It will then proceed towards west-south in Pamban by noon.

Before Cyclone Burevi struck, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had spoken to Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. "I briefed the Prime Minister on the state's preparations for the cyclone," Modi told Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijay over phone. While Prime Minister Modi assured all possible help.
