99.9 per cent Congressmen want Rahul to be president: Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala

- The meeting of party leaders started at Sonia's house

New Delhi Dated 19th December 2020 Saturday

99.9 per cent of Congressmen want Rahul Gandhi to become party president, claimed Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala. Surajwala was speaking before the meeting of party leaders at the residence of Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi.

With five state assembly elections coming up in 2021, Sonia held a meeting today to keep the Congress united and persuade dissident leaders. Ghulam Nabi Azad also reached out to Sonia. In August this year, 23 leaders including MP Shashi Tharoor, Kapil Sibal, Ghulam Nabi Azad and others wrote letters to Sonia Gandhi on the issue of party president. At the time, the letter was considered a rebellion by senior leaders.

But after the recent turmoil of the Congress in the Bihar Assembly and Hyderabad Municipal Corporation elections, the party's Movdi Mandal realized that if the party's internal tensions were not stopped, the party's five assembly elections next year were likely to be tumultuous. That is why a meeting of party leaders was being held at Sonia Gandhi's residence today.
