Voting for the Manipur Assembly by-election continues, with Corona's precautionary four-seat by-election

A by-election was held today for four seats in the Manipur Assembly of Northeast India between major states like Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. Voting began early in the morning with Corona's precaution.

A total of 11 candidates were in the fray for the four seats. Lilong An Wangjing Tentha in Thoubal district and Saitu in Kangpokpi and Wangoi in West Imphal - all four seats were vacated by the resignation of Congress MLAs. All four Congress MLAs joined the BJP.

Manipur currently has a BJP government. BJP candidates were contesting in three of the four seats. The fourth seat was contested by an independent candidate whom the BJP had declared support. Congress was contesting by-elections in four seats. All polling stations were sanitized and voters were clearly instructed not to cast their ballots without wearing masks. The last hour was reserved for voters who were infected with corona. Voting was to run from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. The counting and results will be announced on November 10.
