Former Special Judge SK Singh acquitted 32 accused, including Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi and Uma Bharti, in the Babri Masjid demolition case. The apex court today refused to increase the security provided to Yadav. Justice R.F. A bench headed by Justice Nariman heard the plea of Judge Yadav, who delivered the judgment in the Babri case on the last day of his duty, today.

"We have read the letter written by the judge, but we are not in the interest of enhancing the security arrangements," the bench said after the former judge's request to continue the security arrangements as the case was very sensitive. On September 30, Judge Yadav handed down a high-profile Babri Masjid demolition case in which several leaders of the BJP and VHP, as well as the Bajrang Dal, were acquitted.

On December 6, 1992, a sixteenth-century mosque was demolished by some fundamentalists and a statue of Lord Rama was erected there. Last year, a five-member constitutional bench of the Supreme Court gave Hindus 2.77 acres of land claimed by Hindus and Muslims to build a temple. The apex court also ordered allotment of five acres of land for construction of a mosque.
