New York-based Scottish writer Stuart Douglas was declared the winner of the Booker Prize, defeating Indian-origin author Avani Doshi. Douglas' novel 'Shaggy Bain' was declared the Booker Prize winner.

The last six writers shortlisted by the Booker Prize 2020 judging committee included Avani Doshi of Indian origin, and Avani's fans believed that Avani would win the Booker Prize this year.

Stuart Douglas, 44, dedicated the story to his mother. His mother died when Douglas was 16 years old. Douglas then went to New York to take a course in fashion designing after graduating from the Royal College of Arts in London.

"I was really surprised when my fiction got the Booker Prize," Douglas said. I couldn't believe the fact that I got this prize. However this novel was like a special experience for me.

Stewart began writing a decade ago. He had worked for some of America's most famous brands. A total of 162 entries were received for the Booker Prize this year, a spokesman for the judging panel said.
