The Trinamool Congress, the ruling party in West Bengal, seemed to be in a tug of war. One by one, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's aides seemed to be leaving. According to the latest news, one of his ministers Suvendu Adhikari resigned from the post of Hooghly Riverbridge Commissioner.

Mamata had appointed party MP Kalyan Banerjee to the post to show that she was not adversely affected by the officer's resignation.

In Mamata Banerjee's government, officials from the Irrigation, Water Resources and Transport departments have long been different from Mamata Banerjee. They do not even fly the Trinamool Congress flag in their programs. His supporters had put up posters all over the state saying, "Our grandfather's successor." Rumors were circulating that Suvendu Adhikari would quit the Trinamool Congress party before the state assembly elections next year. He himself did not make such an announcement but a friend of his from the party had given a hint to the media that the officer was going to leave the Trinamool Congress party before the Assembly elections.

"I was informed of my son's resignation by the media," said Shishir Adhikari, the officer's father and party MP. I have nothing to say if the Chief Minister considers Kalyan Banerjee a more suitable person than my son.
