Gogoi, a three-time CM of Assam, died at the age of 84 in August.

Former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, who died at the age of 86 in a hospital in Guwahati, breathed his last on Monday at the Guwahati Medical College and Institute, where his condition was already critical.

Earlier on Sunday, his health was showing a general improvement, the director of Guwahati Medical College said, adding that doctors had completed the first cycle of dialysis so that the young Gogoi's kidneys could function properly.

The leading congressional leader was admitted to GMCH Hospital in November due to complications caused by being infected with the corona virus.

Gogoi's son and Lok Sabha member Gaurav Gogoi arrived at the hospital on Saturday night along with Assam Chief Secretary Jishnu Barua. Gogoi's daughter and son-in-law also arrived at the hospital on Sunday.

State Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal also tweeted a tribute to Tarun Gogoi after his death, noting that Tarun Gogoi was the Chief Minister of the state from 2001 to 2016.
