UN condemns Hathras-Balrampur incidents, questions over women's safety in India

- Incidents in India were noted globally

Geneva, Tuesday, October 6, 2020

The incidents of gangrape in Hathras and Balrampur in Uttar Pradesh were noted by the United Nations and women were not safe in India. Renata Desalien, UNO's Permanent Residential Coordinator, said the events in Hathras and Balrampur show that the society still suffers from gender-based violence and crimes against the underprivileged.

The Government of India took serious note of the remarks made by Renata, the UN Women Representative, and said that it would be a mistake to ignore any outside organization. The Government of India was taking these incidents seriously. No outside agency needs to talk about this.

Renata said it was necessary for the concerned family to get justice immediately and the accused to be brought up in the cage of the court immediately. UNO is distressed and concerned about the ongoing incidents of sexual abuse of women and girls in India. Providing social support, counseling, health care and rehabilitation facilities to these families decreases.

Foreign Office spokesperson Anurag Srivastava in the capital New Delhi termed Renata's remarks as "unreasonable" and said the UN Resident Coordinator should realize that the Indian government had taken the matter seriously and was taking necessary steps.
