Petition before Supreme Court to grant minority status to Hindus in nine Indian states

New Delhi, October 25, 2020, Sunday

Even though Hindus are in the majority in India, there are nine states in the country where there are more religions than Hindus. In these nine states, a petition has been filed before the Supreme Court to officially declare Hindus a minority.

At the same time, the petition seeks repeal of the provision under the National Commission for Minorities Act which grants minority status and, if the law is to be maintained, grants minority status to Hindus in nine states where they are in the minority. Its benefits can be found.

The petition, filed in the apex court, also demanded that any petitions challenging the National Commission for Minorities Act pending in the high courts of various states be transferred to the apex court for hearing.

BJP leader Ashwini Upadhyay has filed the petition. In these nine states, the opposite is happening to the majority of the people.

"Minorities in the country should be defined at the state level. Minority status should be given to each state on the basis of language and religion. It is not appropriate for this status to be at the national level," the petition said. He was directed to go to the Delhi High Court. However, the petitioner said that the cases of the High Courts of other states also need to be transferred to the Supreme Court for a hearing.
