Hathras scandal: TMC MP Derek O'Brien falls to the ground in a stampede while visiting the victim's family

- Politics heated up over Hathras scandal, police prevented the delegation from entering the village

Hathras / Lucknow, Ta. 2 October 2020, Friday

Politics is now hot in the case of gangrape and subsequent death of a Dalit girl in Hathras, Uttar Pradesh. When Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra arrived in UP on Thursday to pay a visit, a scuffle broke out between TMC MPs and police today to meet the victim's family. Meanwhile TMC MP Derek O'Brien fell. Police prevented the delegation from entering the village.

UP police have cordoned off the rape victim's village. Leaders have blocked access to the media. No leader or media is allowed to reach the victim's house. On Thursday, several leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi, tried to leave Hathras but were not allowed to do so by the police. Similarly, Trinamool Congress MPs were stopped by the police today. Currently, the Yogi government and the UP police have come under fire after the Hathras scandal. So Samajwadi Party workers are also protesting in Lucknow.

"We were going to meet the victim's family, but the police stopped us," TMC leader Mamata Thakur said. When we protested the police not only did the female police pull out our blouses but also charged the baton at our MPs, causing them to fall. The male policemen also touched us badly. This is a shameful incident.

Uttar Pradesh police have completely cordoned off the village of the deceased victim. Section 144 has been imposed in Hathras. Activists of political forces are being prevented from leaving. No one is allowed in the village. Hathras village has been turned into a camp. Protests are taking place across the country in the wake of the massacre. In Lucknow, SP workers have taken to the streets and chanted slogans against the government.

Even the baton charge can't stop us: SP
One of the activists of the Samajwadi Party said that they were protesting against the way in which incidents of rape and murder of women were declining in UP. Even a police baton charge can’t stop us.

We are not masters but servants of the country: Arvind Kejriwal
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal lamented the Hathras incident, saying the manner in which the state government was treating the victim's family was inappropriate. We live in a democracy and those in power should not forget that we are not masters but servants of the country.

Yogi Sarkar becomes mute and watches the spectacle: Supriya Sule
The Hathras scandal has reverberated in Mumbai as well. "I think the yogi government wants to hide something," said NCP leader Supriya Sule. The manner in which the incident with Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, Congress workers happened and the statements of the DM and other officials are coming to the fore suggests that the Yogi government wants to hide something. UP has come up against three incidents of rape in two days. The Home Minister and the Chief Minister are keeping silent in the state. I urge the Prime Minister that there should be a detailed investigation into this incident. If the yogi government is unable to work for the protection of women in the state, it should resign.
