BSP president Mayawati said the Congress party should apologize for the remarks made by former state chief minister Kamal Nath about a Dalit woman from Madhya Pradesh.

Madhya Pradesh is currently going to hold by-elections. So politics was hot. Former state chief minister Kamal Nath called Dalit leader and former minister Imrati Devi an "item". Politics was more heated on this issue. Mayawati said such a statement made for a Dalit woman was shameful and despicable. There is also a woman president of the Congress. If the Congress is at all ashamed, it should issue a public apology on the issue of Kamal Nath's statement.

Mayawati called on the people to unite on the issue and made a public appeal to the BSP to vote. Mayawati said this was an opportunity to teach a lesson to the Congress party. In all (28) seats of Madhya Pradesh, the voters of Dalit community should give their votes only to Dalit candidates.

Kamal Nath was visiting Dabra constituency in Madhya Pradesh and was campaigning for Dabra Congress candidate Suresh Raje. At that time Kamal Nath had said that Suresh Chandra is our party's candidate and is straightforward, that candidate, what is his name? You know his name better than I do. It is an 'item'. When Imrati Devi came to know about this, she burst into tears and said that this is what is being said about me because I am a Dalit.

Kamal Nath's statement, however, caused quite a stir in the state. BSP president Mayawati also slammed the knock.
