The second train of Kisan Rail, one of the few schemes announced by the Prime Minister for the welfare of farmers, left Anantapur station in Andhra Pradesh this morning. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister S Jagan Mohan Reddy flagged off the train.

Andhra Pradesh Minister of State for Railways Suresh Angadi and Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar were also present on the occasion. The train will run from Anantapur to Azadpur Mandi in the capital New Delhi.

Jagan Mohan Reddy congratulated the Prime Minister for launching this train. The train, which left for Delhi this morning, was loaded with 214 tonnes of tomatoes, 138 tonnes of bananas, 32 tonnes of oranges, 11 tonnes of papayas, 8 tonnes of kalingar and three tonnes of mangoes. The train, which has 14 parcel vans, will cover a distance of 2150 km from Anantapur to Azadpur Mandi in 40 hours. The train also carried four van loads for Nagpur (Maharashtra) and 10 van loads for Adarsh Nagar.

Currently, the Kisan Rail was planned to run one day a week. On the 7th of this month, the first Kisan train left Devlali station in Maharashtra and ran to Danapur in Bihar. Earlier this train was also to run once a week. But as demand grows, it is now operated twice a week.

At present, transporting vegetables and fruits by truck to different parts of the country costs farmers about Rs 300 crore a year. Vegetables and fruits will reach the destination faster by Kisan Rail and this will reduce the damage.
