Restrictions on exports to curb the ever-increasing prices of onions

New delhi date. Monday, September 14, 2020

The government has banned the export of onion in view of rising prices in the country. The Director General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) said in a notification that exports of all types of onions have been banned with immediate effect. It also includes Bangalore Rose and Krishnapuram Onions.

So far there has been no ban on the export of this type of onion. "Onion prices are rising in the country and there is a shortage in the country," an official said. The shortage is seasonal but the Kovid-19 epidemic has led to large exports of onions in the last few months.

India exported .8 198 million worth of onions during April-June. Last year, onions exported કરોડ 440 million for the entire year. India is the largest exporter of onions to Bangladesh, Malaysia, UAE and Sri Lanka. So far, the price of onion, which was selling at Rs 15-20 per kg in retail only 15 days ago, has gone up to Rs 45-50.

Rotten onions are also being sold at Rs 25 per kg. The wholesale price of onion in Azadpur Mandi in Asia's largest Delhi today is between Rs 26 and Rs 37. According to traders, the rise in prices is due to damage to the onion crop. The rains in the last few days in Karnataka have damaged the standing crop of onions.
