- Protests are to be held in front of the Parliament House
New Delhi Dated 16th September 2020 Wednesday
Thousands of farmers from across the country, especially from Haryana and Punjab, descended on the country's capital, New Delhi. The farmers had announced to protest in front of the Parliament House in protest of three recent orders issued by the central government.
According to Gurnam Singh, leader of the Indian Farmers' Union, not only Haryana and Punjab, but also Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan cadres came together to oppose the three bills. The government wants the three bills to be approved in the monsoon session of Parliament.
Earlier, the farmers had staged thousands of demonstrations in Chandigarh. There were also clashes with police at the time. The Congress had backed the farmers' movement to oust the BJP-led central government. Like the Congress, the BJP's ally Shiromani Akali Dal also expressed displeasure over the orders. If the matter is put to a vote in Parliament on Wednesday, the Akali Dal will vote against the order.
The government claimed that the order was issued to rescue farmers from the hands of middlemen and ensure that farmers get a fair amount for their crops.
Thousands of farmers took to the streets in Delhi as well as in Punjab and their protests were still going on.
