8 MPs suspended for a week, swelled in Rajya Sabha on Sunday

- Eight, including Derek O'Brien, were present in Parliament today

New Delhi Dated 21st September 2020 Monday

Rajya Sabha Speaker Venkaiah Naidu on Sunday suspended eight lawmakers in the Rajya Sabha for a week. The MPs included Derek O'Brien of the Trinamool Congress, Sanjay Singh of the Aam Aadmi Party, Rajiv Satav of the Congress, Ripun Bora and Nazir Hussain, KK Ragesh, Dola Sen and Ek Karim.

When the Rajya Sabha session started at 8 am today, Naidu said that some members had come to the House yesterday and clashed with the Rajya Sabha vice-president. The vice president was prevented from doing his job. This incident is unfortunate and reprehensible. I request these members to introspect.

Even after that, there was a commotion in the house. Eventually the Speaker announced that the House meeting would be adjourned until ten o'clock. The names of the eight members mentioned earlier, during the debate on the agriculture bill on Sunday, tore up important papers, smashed the mic, climbed on the table and said yes to the Rajya Sabha rules. Some members tore up the rule book and threw its pages at the chairman. Others tore up copies of agricultural bills. All these misbehaving members were suspended by the Chairman till the end of the monsoon session.
