Counterfeit currency notes worth Rs 1.17 crore and 17 gold biscuits weighing 1.2 kg were seized from Cooch Behar district of West Bengal. The operation was jointly conducted by the West Bengal Police and the Armed Border Force.
Cooch Behar SP Sana Akhtar said that in addition to counterfeit notes, gold was seized in the investigation and nine persons were arrested. A car, two bikes and 11 mobile phones were also seized from the suspects.
The persons were on their way to Assam from West Bengal when they were apprehended along with Muddamal. "We are investigating in this case where the consignment came from and who else is involved," police said. The counterfeit currency notes seized were in 500 and 2000 notes.
The operation was carried out on the basis of an input provided by the Armed Border Force. Attempts were being made to smuggle this counterfeit money and gold into Assam. The men fled the car before seeing the police, who chased them and eventually sped off.
