The informal meeting of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) behind closed doors has once again embarrassed Pakistan. All the countries participating in the conference clarified their stance on the Jammu and Kashmir issue, calling it a bilateral issue. At the same time, the council said that this is not a matter of time and attention. This information was given by TS Tirumurthy, Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations.
India on Wednesday slammed Pakistan's nefarious move to take the Kashmir issue to the UN Security Council forum. According to India, the whole world views the Kashmir issue as bilateral and there is no need for the international body to focus its time and attention on it. TS Thirumurthy, India's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, said Pakistan had earlier tried unsuccessfully to raise the issue with the international community.
According to Tirumurthy, at the council meeting, almost all the countries agreed that the Kashmir issue was a bilateral issue between India and Pakistan. Under these circumstances, Pakistan's attempt once again failed.
It is learned that in the council meeting, the US took the lead and sided with India in not allowing any decision to be taken on the issue. Pakistan has been raising the Kashmir issue from time to time since a law was passed by the Indian Parliament in August last year giving separate status to Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
Pakistan has sought to have China, a permanent member of the Security Council, on its side to advance its campaign. However, in an informal closed-door meeting between the 15 members of the council, no point of discussion was taken on record and no statement was made in the media. Tirumurthy said the issue has not been discussed in any formal meeting of the council since November 1965. Only two informal meetings have been held in August 2019 and January 2020.
In its first informal meeting in August 2019, China slammed India for snatching special state status from Kashmir. However, India has made it clear to the international community that the abolition of Article 370 is an internal matter of India.
