A plane crash in the U.S. state of Alaska on Friday morning killed a total of seven people, including a Republican Assembly member. According to media reports, the accident took place near Soldotna Airport near Kenai Island in Alaska when two planes collided with each other in the air.

The single-engine D-Haveland DHC-to-Beaver crashed into a two-engine Piper P-Twelve at around 8.30am local time. Among those killed was Gary Knopp, a member of the local assembly. Authorities said the wreckage of the plane that crashed in the crash fell near Sterling Highway. The two planes flew almost simultaneously from Soldot airport. The two planes collided in the air about 150 miles from the city of Anchorage. In addition to the pilot, only Assembly member Gary Knopp was on board. The second plane had a total of six passengers. The New York Times reports that Alaska Governor Mike Dunley has ordered the national flag to be flown at half-mast in Alaska province until Monday in honor of Gary Knopp's death. Various Alaskan leaders paid tribute to Gary Knopp.

The report also said that officials of the concerned department were investigating the accident. Both planes were completely wrecked in the accident. However, the pilot of one of the planes was involved in the accident and inquiries will reveal the cause of the accident, officials said.
