The Prime Minister's Office held a meeting earlier this month on the issue of holding simultaneous elections across the country. Secretary to the Prime Minister PK Mishra presided over the meeting.
Two options were discussed at the meeting. The first option was to amend 243 K and 243 ADA of the Constitution to prepare a voter list for holding simultaneous elections across the country. Another option was to persuade the states to accept the Election Commission's voter list for municipal and panchayat elections by asking them to change their laws.
According to informed sources, the meeting was also attended by Cabinet Secretary Rajiv Gauba, Legislative Secretary G Narayan Raju, Panchayati Raj Secretary Sunil Kumar and Secretary General Umesh Sinha along with three representatives of the Election Commission.
