New delhi date. Thursday, August 6, 2020

Former Union Minister and Bharatiya Janata Party leader Manoj Sinha will now take over as the lieutenant governor of Jammu and Kashmir. Girish Chandra Murmu resigned as his lieutenant governor on Wednesday evening and the appointment of Manoj Sinha was announced by the Rashtrapati Bhavan this morning.

Yesterday, August 5, marked the one-year anniversary of the abolition of Article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir, and in the midst of all this, the news of Murmu's sudden resignation came on Wednesday evening. Murmu's resignation has since been accepted by the President. Now that Manoj Sinha has been given the responsibility as the new Vice-Governor, it clearly means that Jammu and Kashmir has once again made a political entry into a high position.

Earlier, Satyapal Malik was the governor of Jammu and Kashmir when it was a full-fledged state, but when it became a union territory, the officer was sent to GC Murmu. GC Murmu has also been counted among the special officers of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Who is Manoj Sinha?

Manoj Sinha has been an MP from Ghazipur in the east and a veteran face of the Bharatiya Janata Party in eastern Uttar Pradesh. However, they lost the 2019 Lok Sabha elections and it was a big shock. Manoj Sinha has been a minister in the first term of the Modi government and he was the Minister of State for Railways and Minister of State for Communications.

Manoj Sinha was leading the race for the Chief Minister's post when the Bharatiya Janata Party won a historic victory in the 2017 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. He had reached Varanasi for puja from Delhi and hoped to be sworn in as chief minister but the party put forward Yogi Adityanath. Manoj Sinha is counted among the trusted leaders of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In these circumstances, Manoj Sinha has once again been given a big responsibility by the central government.
