How is this Supreme Court going to protect us?

-The whole judiciary is clouded

-Says former Union Minister and journalist Arun Shourie

New Delhi Dated 21st August 2020 Friday

Former Union Minister and senior journalist Arun Shourie said that the judiciary of our country has become very cloudy. How could a Supreme Court which could not defend itself thus defend a man. Shourie was speaking on the issue of Supreme Court seeking punishment for senior legislator Prashant Bhushan for his so-called contempt of court.

It is pertinent to recall that at one point, Arun Shourie, Prashant Bhushan and senior Chennai-based journalist N Ram also petitioned the Supreme Court not to quash the contempt of court provision. However, for some reason, the trio later withdrew their application. It should also be noted here that Justice Markandey Katju, a retired Supreme Court Justice, has said more than once that countries around the world have repealed the contempt of court provision. We still do not understand why this provision is there.

Arun Shourie was asked if Prashant Bhushan's tweet would erode people's faith in the Supreme Court and weaken one of the four pillars of democracy, the apex court said. Your show has an opinion on this matter. In response to this question, Shourie said, if only two tweets can weaken the judiciary, then there is so much power in tweets, right? This means that the judiciary itself is weak. The Supreme Court cannot defend itself. How will the Supreme Court protect the man in such circumstances?

On the issue of the Supreme Court's decision to sentence Prashant Bhushan, the country's top 1,500 lawyers and leaders of various parties had appealed to the Supreme Court to postpone the sentencing of Prashant Bhushan. Punishing them would violate the fundamental rights of citizens to freedom of speech. Prashant Bhushan had earlier apologized. The apex court had once again made it a condition for Bhushan to apologize before August 24. Prashant Bhushan is no longer in the mood to apologize.
