Heavy rains and landslides in Kerala have killed 12 people and trapped more than 60 workers

A major landslide has occurred in Munnar, Kerala due to continuous rains. Twelve people have been killed so far in the tragedy. Many laborers working in the tea garden are trapped. According to local officials, the accident took place in Idukki district. Heavy rains have cut off communication with these areas. Twelve people have been rescued so far, according to the report. It is said that about 80 people live here.

'Red alert' in the area

Communications services in the area have been disrupted as power lines have been affected due to continuous rains, officials said. As many as 10 laborers' houses have collapsed due to the landslide. Police and fire personnel are present at the spot and the district administration has also asked the hospitals to be ready to face any situation. The Indian Meteorological Department has also issued a 'red alert' in the area.

Help was sought from the Indian Air Force

News agency PTI According to the NDRF team has reached the spot for relief and rescue. About 20 houses have been damaged. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayane said he has approached the Indian Air Force to provide helicopter services in Rajmala for rescue operations.

Difficulty in relieving due to bad weather

Kerala Revenue Minister E. Chandrasekhar said there were about 82 people living in the three labor camps. He said it was not immediately clear if there were workers at the time of the landslide. According to Chandrasekaran, there are many difficulties in reaching the spot due to bad weather.

It is constantly raining

Heavy rains lashed North Kerala on Thursday. A 'red alert' has been issued for Wayanad and Idukki districts in view of heavy rains. So, Nilambur city is flooded due to Chiliyar Nadipur.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said in its bulletin that a "red alert" has been issued for Malappuram district on August 7 in view of the rains. Orange alert has been issued till August 9 in nine districts including Ernakulam, Idukki, Trichur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod. The Malappuram district administration has opened nine camps in the district while seven camps have been opened in Nilambur alone.
