Five killed in rains in Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand

A total of five people were killed today in rain-related incidents in Jammu and Kashmir and Uttarakhand. Heavy rains have been warned in the eastern, northern and central parts of the country over the next five days.

Four people have been killed in a landslide caused by heavy rains in Jammu and Kashmir's Reasi district. 3 of whom are members of the same family. The landslide killed 30-year-old Khalil Ahmed, his 25-year-old wife Ruksana Begum and their relative Mohammad Aslam, according to a police official. Wali Mohammad, 40, was killed in another landslide.

The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway has been closed due to massive landslides. Meanwhile, a junior engineer was killed and three others were seriously injured in a landslide in Uttarakhand's Chamoli district.

The incident took place at a panchayat house in Tali-Ansari village in Chamoli district. There were four people in the panchayat house at the time of the incident. Among them were a junior engineer of a construction company, two drivers of a heavy earth moving machine and a helper.

Heavy rains have disrupted normal life in Odisha. In Uttar Pradesh, 18 districts and 1000 villages are still affected by the floods. According to the meteorological department, heavy rains are expected in Odisha, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Jharkhand by August 28.
