Drugs worth Rs 1,000 crore seized in Navi Mumbai, two arrested

The news that drugs worth Rs 1,000 crore had been seized from a port (dock) in Navi Mumbai had caused a stir. The drugs were seized in a joint operation by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence and Customs.

According to a spokesman, the drug came from Afghanistan via Iran. Two people were also arrested in the case. The spokesman further said that the drug was hidden in a plastic pipe. The pipe was colored in such a way that it looked like bamboo to the viewer. Both the drug carriers referred to it as Ayurvedic medicine. Two custom house agents were also arrested in the case for allegedly importing drugs as Ayurvedic drugs. In addition one importer and one financier were taken fast. Both the importer and the financier were operating from Delhi. Revenue Intelligence had earlier been informed that crores of drugs were to be smuggled.

Relevant officials declined to give further details as further investigation is underway. All he said was that when the time comes, you will be fully informed. At present we can only say that this amount is going to be 1000 crores in the international market. Officials also refused to identify the drugs. It was also denied that it is in powder form or tablet form.
