Clashes between Bajrang Dal and Muslims in Assam, procession for Ayodhya Bhumi Pujan

When Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid homage to the land of the Ram temple in Ayodhya, there were reports of clashes at several places in excess of the festival celebrations. In Assam, local Muslim youths clashed with Bajrang Dal youths marching in Sonitpur district.

Hiding his identity, a district collector said that while the bhumi pujan was being held in Ayodhya, the youths of Bajang Dal had organized a bike rally from the local Hanuman temple. The bike was pelted with stones during the rally. Bajrang Dal youths met five Muslim youths in one room. Meanwhile, a bike and a Tata Magic car were set on fire. Sonitpur Deputy Commissioner of Police Manvendra Pratap Singh said the youths on both sides sustained minor and major injuries in the clash.

He also said that a two-day curfew had been imposed in some areas within the limits of Thelmada police station and Additional Director General of Police GP Singh said police reinforcements had been stepped up and the situation was now under control.

In West Bengal, on the other hand, clashes broke out between BJP workers and police in protest of the state government's announcement of a lockdown. As a result, police arrested 3,400 people, of whom 850 were residents of Kolkata alone. The BJP had two days ago requested Mamata Banerjee's government to allow the procession and celebrations but Mamata did not allow it and on Wednesday declared a statewide lockdown.

The BJP had organized a peace march in protest. According to a police official, clashes broke out between police and BJP workers in Kharagpur, Narayanpur in the 24 Parganas area of ​​West Midnapore district and in the Alirajpur area in the north. Police arrested all of them for breaking the lockdown.
