Chidambaram's sarcasm on ban on defense equipment: Advertisement is just a jargon

New delhi date. Sunday, August 9, 2020

Former Union Minister and senior Congress leader P Chidambaram has targeted Defense Minister Rajnath Singh for announcing a ban on imports of defense equipment. Chidambaram said the defense minister spoke of the 'banger' announcement on Sunday morning and his announcement ended with a 'rumble'.

P. Chidambaram tweeted, "Any ban on imports is in fact a ban on oneself. What the defense minister said in his historic Sunday announcement was only worthy of an office-related order that the minister's secretary could issue. The ban on imports is just a jargon. That means we will try to make a single device in 2 to 4 years (which we import today) and then stop importing. '

It may be mentioned that Defense Minister Rajnath Singh said that the Ministry of Defense is now ready to move fast towards the initiative of a self-reliant India. The government will ban the import of 101 defense equipment to promote defense-related construction in the country. Banning the import of these defense devices will provide huge opportunities for the Indian defense industry to manufacture weapons.

The plan to ban the import of these defense devices will be implemented gradually in phases between 2020 and 2024, the defense minister said. Restrictions on the import of other defense devices will also be marked in phases.

In fact, India imported defense equipment such as assault rifles, artillery guns, radar and light heavy helicopters from other countries. But in a further step towards self-reliance in the defense sector, India has banned the import of 101 defense equipment. India will now manufacture its own equipment and weapons. The ban, announced by the central government, will remain in effect till December 2025.
