Bridge collapses in Bihar just before inauguration, reveals heavy rains and floods

- Allegations of corruption made by the Opposition on JD (U)

Patna 13th August 2020 Thursday

Opposition groups called for a boycott of the Nitish Kumar government in Bihar after the newly constructed bridge collapsed before it could be inaugurated. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar inaugurated the bridge on Janmashtami on Wednesday via video conference. However, the bridge collapsed before the formal opening could be completed.

This is the case in Gopalganj area of Bihar. The Bangaraghat Mahasetu in Gopalganj was being inaugurated by the Chief Minister. But before the bridge, known as Apror Road, collapsed, the opposition collapsed on the so-called corruption of the ruling party.

The bridge was constructed by Bihar State Bridge Construction Corporation. Government sources argued that the floodwaters were so heavy that the newly constructed bridge could not withstand the pressure. Senior officials of the corporation were present at the spot and efforts were being made on a war footing to make this approach road efficient by employing two JCB machines and hundreds of laborers. The place where the bridge collapsed is near Satjoda Bazaar in Panapur area of Saran.

In Gopalganj's Vaikunthapur, the Saran dam collapsed at seven places simultaneously. Fifty meters of construction collapsed on the approach road near the Bangaraghat bridge after the dam broke.

RJD leader Tejaswi Yadav seized the opportunity and alleged in a conversation with the media that public money was being wasted in this way. The construction department of the state government had prepared the approach road using inferior materials which collapsed before the inauguration.

The ruling party was on the defensive
