Colombo, Ta. 7 August 2020, Friday

In the early days of Sri Lanka's parliamentary elections, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa's Sri Lanka People's Party (SLPP) appears to be gaining an absolute majority. Prime Minister Narendra Modi then called Mahinda Rajapaksa and wished him victory. Five results have been announced so far from the Sinhala-majority southern region, with the SLPP getting more than 60 per cent of the vote.

Rajapaksa tweeted to thank Modi

Mahinda Rajapaksa tweeted to thank Prime Minister Modi for his victory. He wrote, 'Prime Minister Narendra Modiji thank you for your greeting call. With the strong support of the Sri Lankan people, we look forward to working with you to advance the long-standing cooperation between the two countries. Sri Lanka and India are relatives and friends.

PM Modi's retweet

Later, Prime Minister Modi retweeted Rajapaksa's tweet and wrote, "Thank you Mahinda Rajapaksa. Enjoyed talking to you. Once again many many good wishes. We will work together to advance all areas of bilateral cooperation and take our special relationship to new heights. "

Sri Lanka's newest party came in second

The closest rival to the Sri Lankan People's Party is a new party founded by Sajith Premdasa. Premdasa has split from his original party, the United National Party (UNP), to form a new party. The UNP ranks fourth in the election results.

Good performance of Marxist JVP

Based on the official results, it is understood that the Marxist Janata Vimukti Paramuna (JVP) has also performed better than the UNP. In the Tamil-majority northern region, the main Tamil party has won in one constituency in Jaffna while the Rajapaksa's ally Eelam People's Democratic Party (EPDP) has defeated the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) in another constituency in Jaffna district.
