Pakistan's highest honor to Kashmir's separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani

New Delhi, 28 July 2020, Tuesday

Syed Ali Shah Geelani, the separatist leader of Jammu and Kashmir, announced that Pakistan would confer its highest civilian honor on him. The Nishan-e-Pakistan award was earlier announced to Dilip Kumar, the acting king of India, and Morarji Desai, the prime minister of the Janata Party government.

By announcing the award to Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Pakistan had given public evidence that Geelani was already a part of Pakistan. Gilani has been under house arrest since the Indian government repealed Article 370, which gives special status to Jammu and Kashmir, on August 5 last year. Pakistan's parliament on Monday approved a resolution to give Gilani a Nishan-e-Pakistan. At the same time, a proposal was made to set up a university in Gilani's name. Presented by Pakistani MP Mushtaq Ahmed. The proposal passed an oral vote. By making this decision on the first anniversary of the revocation of the special status of Jammu and Kashmir, Pakistan had once again proved that separatist leaders like Gilani were creating constant unrest in Jammu and Kashmir at the behest of Pakistan.

Gilani was a lifelong chairman of the Hurriyat Conference, like Khandiya in Pakistan. Gilani has been an active member of the Hurriyat since its inception. Sixteen groups of separatist leaders were formed in the intervening period. All these groups were funded by Pakistan to create unrest in Jammu and Kashmir. Other groups felt that Gilani was taking a very soft stance with the Indian government on the Kashmir issue. Gilani retired from political activity after August 5 last year. However, as he was in custody, he was not in a position to engage in any political activity. Gilani has been at the forefront of Pakistan-backed separatist activities since 2003. However he announced last month that he was parting ways with the Hurriyat. Gilani has been a three-time MLA.

Gilani was also accused of terror funding after the 2016 violence in Jammu and Kashmir.
