Vellore dated 21st July 2020 Tuesday

Nalini, who is serving a life sentence in the assassination of Congress leader and incumbent Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, was found to have attempted suicide in Vellore jail. Nalini's lawyer Puglainti gave this information to the media over phone.

Nalini has been in jail for the last 29 years. He had recently had an argument with another prisoner, and for the first time in 29 years, he attempted suicide. The prisoner with whom he had an altercation is also accused of life imprisonment. After the altercation, the prisoner lodged a complaint against Nalini with the jailor. As a result, Nalini became more depressed and tried to commit suicide.

"Such an incident has never happened before, so we are trying to find out the cause and details of the quarrel," lawyer Puglainti said. Nalini's husband Murugan is also in jail in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case. Murugan had requested the jailor to move Nalini from Vellore jail to Pujal jail. "We will take up the matter with the court," lawyer Puglainti said.

On May 21, 1991, while Rajiv Gandhi was on an election tour in Madras (now Chennai), he was surrounded by a crowd of fans in the Shriramparambudur area. Nalini was also in the crowd. There was a bomb in the flower garland he offered to Rajiv Gandhi. Rajiv Gandhi's blows were blown away in that bomb blast. It was later rumored that Rajiv Gandhi had sent an Indian army to help the Sinhalese in the conflict between Tamils and Sinhalese living in Sri Lanka, so a terrorist organization called the Tamil Tigers conspired to assassinate Rajiv Gandhi.
