Clashes with militants in Srinagar, internet shut down in entire area

Security forces launched a major operation against militants hiding in Srinagar, the capital of Jammu and Kashmir. Firing has been going on in the area since this morning and the entire area has been cordoned off by security forces. The Internet was shut down in the area.

It is estimated that three armed militants were hiding in the area when the security forces warned them to surrender and start firing. Security forces returned fire. At the time of writing, the shootings were ongoing. An Indian security personnel was reportedly injured.

A security spokesperson said that the search operation was launched on the basis of information that a few militants were hiding in Ranbirgarh, a part of Srinagar. The shooting started when an investigation was underway in the area where these people were suspected to be. Security forces returned fire.

The operation was joined by Special Operations Group of Jammu and Kashmir Police, CRPF and 29 National Rifles. The internet was shut down as a precaution to prevent rumors and violent demonstrations during searches of terrorists.
