Ban on all Indian private news channels in Nepal, decision of MSOs

New delhi date. 10 July 2020, Friday

Amid tensions with India, Nepal's cable operators have banned all Indian private news channels in their country. However, television has been excluded from their ban. The move comes in the wake of heavy online criticism of Nepal's coverage by Indian news channels, as it portrayed a bad image of Nepal's leadership.

The decision to ban Indian private news channels has been taken by the foreign news distribution organization Multi System Operators (MSO) and all private channels except India's national news network, Doordarshan. Nepal's Information and Broadcasting Minister Yuvraj Khatiwada said on Thursday evening that Nepal could find political and legal solutions. At the same time, news of an attack on Nepal's sovereignty and dignity by the Indian media could be questioned at the diplomatic level.

There was outrage in Nepal against Indian media reports after several Indian news channels questioned the character of several Nepali leaders, including Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and Chinese Ambassador to Nepal Hou Yankee. However, no official order has been issued by the Nepal government so far. The decision comes at a time when India and Nepal are at loggerheads over a new map of Nepal.

India-Nepal relations are currently strained due to the border dispute. On May 8, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated a new road from Lipulekh to Dharachula. Nepal, however, opposed the inscription as its own. Then on May 18, Nepal unveiled its new map, which included Lipulekh, Limpiyadhura and Kalapani, three regions of India.
