The DGCA has issued new guidelines to keep the middle seat vacant on flights

New delhi date. 01 June 2020, Monday

The Director General of Civil Aviation has asked the airlines to vacate the middle seat in the plane for the safety of the passengers. However, there are some exceptions. The decision follows a Supreme Court order regarding the safety of passengers.

The new guideline calls on airlines to try to keep the middle seat vacant. If that is not possible the middle seat passenger is asked to provide a gown covering the body. The cover should be made in accordance with the standards approved by the Ministry of Textiles. However members of the same family may be allowed to sit together. In addition, all passengers have been ordered to be provided safety kits by the airlines which will include masks, face shields and sanitizer pouches. The new guidelines will be implemented from June 3.

The civil aviation ministry had constituted a special committee on May 26 after the apex court questioned the central government's and DGCA's stance on passenger safety. This special committee reviewed the health related protocol and submitted its recommendations to the Ministry of Civil Aviation. In addition to leaving the middle seat vacant in this recommendation, several suggestions have also been given. In which all the passengers have been instructed to be given safety kits by the airlines. The kit includes a mask, face shield and sanitizer.

The recommendation states not to give food or water to any passenger unless there is a cause of serious illness. It is recommended that passenger boarding and de-boarding be phased out, not simultaneously. At the same time the air-conditioning system in the aircraft has to be set up in such a way that the air can be changed in the shortest period of time.

The plane has been ordered to be sanitized at the end of the voyage. However, in a transit flight the vacated seat will be sanitized when the passenger is present in the aircraft. Each aircraft has also been ordered to deep clean at the end of the day. The toilet in the plane is cleaned frequently. Airlines will continue to test the health of crew members on a regular basis. In addition all cabin crew will be provided with a full gear protective suit.
