Supreme Court blocks Lord Jagannathji's rathyatra in Orissa over corona

New Delhi, June 18, 2020, Thursday

The Supreme Court has this year banned Lord Jagannath's rathyatra in Puri, Orissa due to increasing cases of corona virus.

The apex court said the rath yatra could not be allowed this year in the public interest and for the safety of the people. Chief Justice Sharad Bobade said, "Lord Jagannath will not forgive if the rathyatra is allowed. This order is necessary for the health of the people."

The rath yatra was scheduled to start on June 23 this year. The nine-day rath yatra attracts 7 lakh people every year. However, considering the risk of corona, the Supreme Court has rejected the rathratni. It was earlier decided that the rath yatra would be taken out without devotees.

An application was filed in the Supreme Court by an NGO in Orissa to ban the rath yatra. The organization argued that if fireworks could be banned on Diwali, why not on a rath yatra.

Following the Supreme Court ruling, the rath yatra in other cities, including Ahmedabad, may now be questioned.
