Amid tensions with China, India is stepping up cooperation with Japan and Australia, other victims of China's grandeur. The navies of India and Japan conducted joint military exercises in the Indian Ocean in the event of a confrontation with China.

The Japanese navy tweeted that on June 27, two Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force ships, Kashima and Shimayuki, had conducted exercises in the Indian Ocean with two Indian Navy warships, the Rana and the Kulish.

Japan is also embroiled in a dispute with China over ownership of a maritime island. The Japanese navy recently pushed the Chinese submarine out of its maritime borders after it was discovered that a Chinese submarine was intercepting at sea near southern Japan.

The island that China claims is owned by Japan since 1972. China has in the past threatened to take military action to occupy the island.
