Petrol and diesel prices were hiked for the 16th day in a row today. Today, a liter of petrol was priced at 33 paise and diesel at 58 paise.

At the same time, petrol and diesel prices have reached record levels. In the last 16 days, petrol price has been hiked by Rs 8.3 per liter and diesel by Rs 9.46 per liter. This is the largest price hike in 15 days since petrol and diesel prices were deregulated in April 2002.

Today, the price of a liter of petrol in Delhi has gone up from Rs 79.23 to Rs 79.56. The price of a liter of petrol has gone up from Rs 78.27 to Rs 78.55.

Petrol-diesel prices are hiked across the country by oil marketing companies but petrol and diesel prices vary from state to state.

It may be mentioned that till May, 2017, petrol and diesel prices were increased every fortnight. But then the prices are increased on a daily basis by the oil companies. There was no change in petrol and diesel prices for 82 days during the lockdown. Oil marketing companies have started changing prices on a daily basis from June 7.

Earlier, the highest price of diesel in Delhi was Rs 75.69 on October 16, 2018. The highest price of petrol was Rs 84 on October 4, 2018. In Delhi, today's petrol price is Rs 79.56, excise duty of Rs 32.98 and local sales tax of Rs 17.71. That means the retail price of a liter of petrol is taxed at 64 per cent.

Similarly, today's diesel price in Delhi is Rs 78.55, excise duty of Rs 31.83 and VAT of Rs 17.60. That means the retail price of a liter of diesel is taxed at 63 per cent. At the same time, the price of a liter of petrol in Mumbai has gone up from Rs 86.04 to Rs 86.36. The price of a liter of diesel has gone up from Rs 77.24 to Rs 76.69.

Criticizing the Modi government for raising petrol and diesel prices amid the Koro epidemic, senior Congress leader and former Petroleum Minister M Virappa Moily said the Modi government's attitude was "cruel". Moily said in a statement that Corona's cases were on the rise and the government was adding to the people's woes by raising petrol and diesel prices as the economy plunged into recession and people's incomes plummeted.
