Will the justice scheme in the state of Chhattisgarh prove to be a game changer for the Congress?

Raipur, May 21, 2020, Thursday

NYAY means to speak justice, which immediately reminds me of the Lok Sabha election campaign held in 2019. Congress had insisted on a justice plan to put direct money into the account of the poor but the issue proved to be a boomerang for Congress. Despite promises of justice, the BJP and allied parties were again on the throne of Delhi. There are more than one reason why people do not have faith in the justice of the Congress party which has given schemes like MNREGA but today on 21st May a justice scheme named Rajiv Gandhi Kisan Nyay Yojana has been launched in the Congress ruled state of Chhattisgarh. The 21st is also Rajiv Gandhi's birthday. He was killed in a suicide bombing in 1989 while addressing a public meeting in Perabdur, Tamil Nadu. The attack came at the behest of Tamil Tiger Ilam, an active liberation party in Sri Lanka.

Political analysts believe that if the scheme, which provides subsidies to the poor and farmers, succeeds, it could prove to be a game changer for Congress. According to the information received, under this scheme, an amount of Rs 5700 crore will be transferred to the accounts of 19 lakh farmers in four installments. The first installment of Rs 1,500 crore will be given to farmers. Not only that, the situation of sugarcane growers in Chhattisgarh is very fragile. A subsidy of Rs 73.55 crore will be given to 34627 farmers to offset the rising cost of sugarcane production and declining profits. In Chhattisgarh, the peasantry and the poor voted for the Congress so much that efforts will be made to maintain their faith in the justice scheme. If successful, the Congress may pressurize the central government to implement it in other states.

In the Lok Sabha elections, the Congress was talking about putting Rs 72,000 in the accounts of 10 crore families. The Congress party considered Rahul Gandhi's propaganda of this justice scheme as a unit of order. Former Reserve Bank chairman Raghuram Rajan and Nobel laureate Abhijeet Banerjee have also backed the idea of putting money in the bank accounts of the poor. At present, the poor and workers are most affected by the Corona epidemic. As a result of the lockdown, purchasing power without livelihoods is declining and they need help not in the form of loans or relief but in cash, so the justice scheme also emphasizes on helping by giving money directly.
