Former Indian women hockey captain Waikholm Suraj Lata Devi has lodged a complaint against her husband against domestic violence, physical harassment and mental torture. She complained that she had been tortured by her husband for demanding dowry since she got married in 2005.

In the captaincy of Suraj Lata Devi, the Indian women's hockey team won three gold medals in the 2002 Commonwealth, the 2003 Afro-Asian Games and the 2004 Hockey Asia Cup. Among them, the Commonwealth Game inspired the making of a Bollywood movie called 'Chak De India'.

According to Suraj Lata, after marriage, she came with her medals and photos etc., which was ridiculed by her husband, Shanta Singh, and questioned the benefits.

In addition, Shanta Singh accused Suraj Lata of winning the Arjuna award by immoral conduct. She had been persecuted so far in the hope that her husband's behavior would change, but with the limit of endurance she revealed the whole thing.

In November 2019 a tournament was organized by Rail Coach Factory at Lodhi Sultanpur in Kapurthala in Punjab and Suraj Lata was entrusted with it. At that time, Shanta Singh had beaten her in a state of intoxication so that Suraj Lata decided to complain. Suraj Lata Devi, mother of two children, lodged a complaint against her husband at Manipur police station in January.
