CAA opposition. PM Modi avoids visit to Assam for the second time in a month

New Delhi, Jan 9, 2020, Thursday

The first protest on the CAA (Citizenship Bill) started in Assam.

It is affecting PM Narendra Modi's visit to Assam. Modi had inaugurated the Khelo India Youth Games in Assam on January 10, but he has avoided visiting Assam at the last minute.

This is the second time in the last month that PM Modi has had to turn around to visit Assam. Assam BJP also acknowledged that PM Modi was invited to inaugurate the Games.

It is worth mentioning that the All Assam Student Union had earlier threatened to oppose the Citizenship Bill saying that if PM Modi came to Assam, he could face great anger from the people. An English newspaper report quoted an Assam official as saying that PM Modi would not come to inaugurate the Games. Chief Minister Sonowal is going to Delhi tomorrow and is likely to meet PM Modi. PM Modi is likely to be invited to attend the closing ceremony of the Games on January 22.
