The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) has approved the creation of the post of Chief of Defense Staff (CDS). This post has been constituted on the recommendation of Kargil Review Committee, II. He will also serve as a military adviser to the government.

Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar further said that the Department of Military Affairs, headed by the Chief of Defense Staff (CDS), would be formed under the Ministry of Defense. Pradhan further said that CDS will be considered for four star general and his salary will be equal to that of service chief.

The CCS also approved the report of a high-level committee headed by National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, officials said. This high level committee set the framework for CDS, determining responsibility. It is noteworthy that Prime Minister Modi announced on August 3 that CDS will be appointed as the head of all three services in India. After the announcement of Prime Minister Modi, a Doval-led Implementation Committee has been formed.

Javadekar informed the media that the Cabinet had approved the proposal to create the post of Chief of Defense staff. The first CDS of the country will be made in the coming days. Army Chief General Bipin Rawat, who retired on December 2, is considered a strong contender for the post.
