The Nirbhaya misdemeanor case that shook the country has completed seven years on December 16. Due to this incident, the then central government gave a total of Rs. 1649 crore to all the states.

The Center has been urged to use the funds to take measures on women's safety. However, out of the total Rs 1659 crore, only Rs 147 crore has been used so far. Six states, including Maharashtra, have not yet used any of the funds.

Of the Rs 1649 crore sanctioned by the central government, only Rs 147 crore has been used, Union Minister for Women and Child Welfare Smriti Irani has made a statement in Parliament. Of the Rs 191 crore allocated to Karnataka, only 13.62 crore has been spent, which means that Karnataka has used only seven per cent of the funds.

Tamil Nadu has also used only three per cent ie Rs. 6 crore out of 190.68 crore. While the six states and union territories Maharashtra, Manipur, Meghalaya, Sikkim, Tripura and Daman-Diu did not use the funds received from the central government.

Delhi was given the highest amount of Rs 390 crore of all the states and union territories. Of this, only Rs 19.41 crore has been spent, the central government statement said. Nobel laureate Kailash Satyarthi appealed a few days ago that the amount of unused Nirbhaya Fund should be used to protect the victims and witnesses.
