Government approval of the post of Chief of Army Staff (CDS) will be appointed 4 Star General

New Delhi, December 24, 2019 Tuesday

The central government on Tuesday approved the post of Chief of Defense staff. This position was felt during the Kargil war in 1999.

Union Minister Prakash Javadekar announced at a press conference that the officer appointed to the post of defense officer will be a 4-star general, who will also be the deputy officer in charge of the military affairs department.

Government sources said at a Cabinet meeting on security issues, the Cabinet Committee on Tuesday approved the report of a committee chaired by National Security Advisor Ajit Dobhal on finalizing the CDS responsibilities.

During the press conference, Union Minister Javadekar said, "The Secretary-level officer will also have all the powers in the CDS, after which all the files will not need to be forwarded to the Secretary of Defense." The CDS has been given the authority to deliver that file directly to the Minister of Defense. '

The post of Chief of Defense staff was recommended for the first time since the Kargil war of 1999, designed to analyze the performance of the armed forces during the conflict over the LoC.

The review committee suggested that on all matters, the government should designate the head of the defense staff, who could act as a unified consultant.

The president of all three armies is a 4 star officer, and the CDS officer will also be a 4 star general. It is not yet clear what the authority of the CDS will be.
