A petition challenging the citizenship reform bill was presented in the Supreme Court

New Delhi, December 12, 2019, Thursday

A petition challenging the citizenship reform bill that was passed in both houses of parliament was filed in the Supreme Court this morning.

The petition was filed by the League this morning, as announced by the Indian Union Muslim League on Wednesday evening. The main point of the petition was that religious discrimination has been made in this Bill and therefore the Bill should be repealed as it is a violation of the Secularism Article of the Constitution of India.

The bill provides for Indian citizenship to all non-Muslim refugees from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan. Such refugees include Hindus, Sikhs, Christians, Jains, Parsis and Buddhists.

In both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, there was a stir against the exclusion of Muslims in the bill. Congress and Samajwadi Party leaders made speeches saying the bill was discriminatory.

But Amit Shah made arguments that cut everyone's point. Amit Shah said how can Indian citizenship be granted to Pakistani and Bangladeshi Muslims?

However, Amit Shah lost the answer to the question of why the Sri Lankan Tamil Hindu and Christian people were not included in the bill.
