The elections were held on Saturday to elect a new president amidst rampant violence in Sri Lanka, the results of which were announced on Sunday. Gotbaya Rajapaksa, a 70-year-old secretary of China's supporter and opposition leader in Sri Lanka, won.

However, there were attacks on minorities during elections, while firing on buses carrying voters. Security in Sri Lanka has finally elected a new president. However, Rajapaksa's victory may increase India's difficulty as they are more supportive of China.

A total of 35 candidates were in the fray for the new president in Sri Lanka. The most ambitious of these candidates, 70-year-old former defense secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa, has finally won.

His clash was with current ruling party candidate Sajit Premadasa, 52, and Anura Kumara, a candidate for the National People's Power coalition. The last time the president was elected in Sri Lanka in 2015 was when Sirisena, who was president, did not contest.

Both China and India had a close eye on this election as Rajapaksa is believed to be pro-China and he is considered a Kaddwar leader. With his victory, the leader of the Rajapaksa community is back in Sri Lanka.

After this victory, relations between Sri Lanka and India could be affected and China could disavow Sri Lanka by sea. Rajapaksa received 52.25 percent, or about 69,24,255 votes. His rival Premdas got 41.99 percent (55,64,239) votes.

Rajapaksa is considered a supporter of China because they openly announced that if I came to power, I would strengthen Sri Lanka's relations with China. India is the second largest supporter of India and America.

Currently Sri Lanka has taken crores of rupees from China, which has been pressured into debt, but now China's gestures can work. Therefore, India's relations with one more country can be a bit tricky, experts believe. It is likely that Rajapaksa may now entrust his brother Mahinda to the post of Prime Minister. Prime Minister Narendra Modi greeted Rajapaksa for the victory.

The Rajapaksa family killed many Tamils in Sri Lanka. Under his supervision, Sri Lankan forces killed several innocent Tamils, including the head of the LTTE.

The Rajapaksa family has always been pro-China. The recently won Gotabaya Rajapaksa is the brother of former Sri Lankan Prime Minister Mahinda. Mahinda lost surprisingly in the previous election.

Mahinda had stopped the Tamil uprising from Sri Lanka. After which Mahinda became a beloved Buddhist in Sri Lanka. Goebaya was in the Ministry of Defense at the time. And under his supervision the Sri Lankan operation against the LTTE was carried out.
