Hallmarking mandatory on gold jewelry from January 15, 2021: Paswan

(PTI) New Delhi, Ta. November 29, 2019, Friday

Hallmarking on all gold jewelry will become mandatory across the country from January 1, 2021 to ensure the purity of precious metals, said Consumer Affairs Minister Ram Vilas Paswan today.

A notification on this will be issued on January 15 next year and it will be implemented after one year.

A hallmark is a Certificate of Gold Accuracy which is currently mandatory. BIS has been operating a Hallmarking scheme for gold jewelry since April 2000 and currently only about 40% of gold jewelery has been hallmarked. '

We are making Hallmark compulsory for gold jewelry all over India. We will issue a notification on January 15 next year. One year will be given for implementation. It will become compulsory from January 15, 2021, 'Ms Paswan told reporters.

The jewelers and goldsmiths will be given up to a year to complete their existing stock, he added. The decision was taken keeping in view the interest of consumers, especially to provide protection to the gold traders of small villages and small towns. ' We will not touch the jewelry or jewelry that is lying in the customers' homes, ”the minister said. Usually jewelers refurbish old jewelry.
