(PTI) New Delhi, Ta. November 25, 2019, Monday

The Special Protection Group (Amendment) Bill was introduced today in the Lok Sabha amid the Congress' nomination for Maharashtra. According to the bill, SPG protection will not be granted to former Prime Minister families who do not live in their official residence.

And families who live in their official residence will be given SPG protection for only five years. That is, SPG protection will be provided to the former Prime Minister and his family for only five years from the date of his leaving the post of Prime Minister.

According to the bill introduced today, SPG security will now be provided only to the Prime Minister and his family living in the residence.

It is worth mentioning that just a few days ago, the government had removed SPG protection of Congress President Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi. As per the SPG (Amendment) Bill, 2019, state level Home Minister G Kishan Reddy said that in the current law, there is no mention of how long SPG protection is given to the former Prime Minister and his family.

According to the new rules, now only Prime Minister Modi will be given SPG protection. The Special Protection Group Act was introduced in 1988 for the first time. The bill was subsequently revised in 1991, 1994, 1999 and 2003. Gandhi family members are being given Z plus protection instead of SPG.
