1900 people die due to monsoon rains in India

In India, in the four months of the monsoon season this year, more than 1900 people have lost their lives and more than 46 million have been lost due to flood and rainfall related incidents in 22 states while more than 25 lakh people were affected, the Union Home Ministry said.

Maharashtra lost the highest number of 382 deaths in the monsoon, while 227 people lost their lives in West Bengal. Rainfall, floods and landslides were recorded in 357 districts in the country.

According to officials, more than 738 people were injured in flood and rain related incidents in the country while more than 20,000 animals were killed. Heavy rains and floods caused 1.03 lakh houses to collapse while 2.05 lakh houses were partially damaged. In the country, 14.14 lakh hectares of land was damaged by standing crops.

India received the highest rainfall since 1994 during the four months of monsoon, the Meteorological Department said. 22 districts of Maharashtra were flooded and 382 people were killed and 369 were injured and 7.19 lakh people were forced to seek shelter in 305 relief camps.

Gujarat has received torrential rains in 22 districts. In the state, 169 people were killed in rain-related incidents while 17,783 were shifted to 102 relief camps. In the monsoon rains and floods, 227 people were killed and 37 were injured in the 22 districts of West Bengal and 37 were lost.

In the state, 43,433 people were forced to seek shelter in 280 relief camps. Heavy rains in Bihar recently led to flooding. The situation was so severe that the entire Patna town was turned into a huge lake.

Here, even in the beginning of the monsoon, the rains wreaked havoc. 161 people were killed due to floods and rains in the state and 1.26 lakh people were shifted to 235 relief camps. In the state, 27 districts were hit by floods.

In Madhya Pradesh, a total of 182 people were subjected to rain and floods while seven were missing. In the low lying areas of the state, the flood waters were replenished in several places. Thus 98 relief camps were started in 38 districts, of which 32,996 people were shifted. Heavy rains and floods in Kerala claimed 181 lives while 72 were injured.

In 13 districts, 15 people went missing. 4.46 lakh people took shelter in 2,227 relief camps in the state. In Karnataka district, 106 people were killed and 14 were injured due to rain and floods in 13 districts. In Assam, 32 districts were hit by rains and 97 people lost their lives.
