The relief offered by the Election Commission in Assam

Guwahati Date: 27 September Friday

The Election Commission has announced that even those who do not have names in the recently registered NRC (National Register of Citizens) will be able to vote in the polls. Thus, there was great relief for those who were not named in the NRC list in Assam.

Voters in Assam also usually include suspects or people of the D-Series. This was the first time the Election Commission has been involved in updating the voter list during the 1997 elections. However, these people could not vote without the consent of the Foreign Tribunal, so almost a hundred million people could not vote in the recent Lok Sabha elections.

Meanwhile, on the 30th of August a new list of NRCs appeared, with names of some 30 million people. There were 19 million other people who did not have a name on the list. At that time, Union Home Minister Amit Shah had assured him that he would not be deported. After the new list was revealed, the situation of the Election Commission became a bit confusing. How to decide what to do with the citizenship decision of a million people whose names are not on the new list.

It was learned that the foreign tribunal will decide the citizenship of these 19 million people. An Election Commission official said that after the Home Ministry's specification, no one will be removed from the voter list immediately.
