New traffic law backfire? More than one BJP-ruled state protested

The new traffic law, adopted by the BJP's central government, which gave the country a one-law formula, seemed likely to be a headache for the central government. The Gujarat state of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah opposed stringent penalties and more than one state opposed the new traffic rules.

Thousands of people have been fined under the new traffic law, which has been in force since September 1st. Meanwhile, some state governments became alarmed and reduced the penalty amount in their respective states. In such states, BJP-ruled states are at the forefront. Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, in a press conference, directly reduced the penalties imposed by the Center as a punishment for violators of traffic laws.

Concerns have been raised about the new traffic laws and the large amount of penalties levied on the erring BJP states in the states where the assembly elections are being held. Maharashtra State Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed this concern in a letter to Nitin Gadkari.

Maharashtra is not alone in doing so. The Jharkhand and Haryana government also opposed the new penal code in view of the Assembly elections. It is understood that these states did so for political reasons, but Karnataka and Uttarakhand also decided on their own.

Uttarakhand, like Gujarat, had reduced the penalties by 90 percent while Karnataka said that we have not yet decided whether to implement the new legislation created by the Center. In terms of size and population of the country, Uttar Pradesh, the largest and most BJP-ruled state, has not yet started implementing the law.
