Assam NRC: 400 Foreigners Tribunals will investigate the cases of those on the list

Dispur, Ta. Saturday 31st August 2019

The Assam government will set up 400 Foreigners Tribunals to look into cases related to those excluded from the final list of the NRC in the state.

Chief Secretary (Home Politics) Kumar Sanjay Krishna said that the process of establishing 200 such tribunals is underway and another 200 tribunals will be set up soon for the benefit of those who have been excluded from the list. The Foreigners Tribunal is a quasi-judicial court, which listens to appeals from people who are excluded from the NRC list.

Krishna said, the tribunal will be lodged and set up at convenient places to ensure hearing. He said that those who were excluded from the final list of NRCs could not be arrested until the Foreigners Tribunal made its decision. These people can go to the Foreigners Tribunal first and file an application in the High Court if they are not satisfied with the FT order.

The State Government will also make all necessary arrangements to provide legal assistance through DLSA to those who are out of the NRC list.
